Saturday at Donington Park delivered a day of milestones and high drama as Nicolò Bulega made WorldSBK history in the morning before teammate Iker Lecuona stole the headlines by claiming his maiden WorldSBK victory in a thrilling Race 1.
Following Friday's intense heat, conditions were slightly kinder around the Leicestershire circuit, with temperatures hovering around 28°C and a welcome breeze creating more comfortable conditions for riders, teams and spectators.
Earlier in the day, championship leader Bulega continued his remarkable qualifying form by securing a record ninth consecutive Tissot Superpole pole position, surpassing Jonathan Rea's previous WorldSBK benchmark. The Aruba.it Racing Ducati rider headed an all-Ducati front row ahead of teammate Lecuona and Yari Montella, appearing perfectly placed to continue his dominant run into Race 1.
However, Race 1 produced one of the closest battles of the season.
Lecuona made the stronger getaway from the front row before a small mistake early in the race briefly handed Bulega the lead. The Spaniard immediately fought back to reclaim first place, setting up an enthralling battle that lasted for all 23 laps.
The two Ducati teammates traded blows throughout the contest, with Bulega twice edging ahead only for Lecuona to respond almost instantly on both occasions. Rarely separated by more than a few tenths of a second, the pair kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final lap as Lecuona resisted relentless pressure to secure victory by just 0.165 seconds.
The emotional victory finally ended Lecuona's wait for a first WorldSBK win on his 141st World Championship start while also bringing Bulega's remarkable 25-race winning streak to an end. Despite finishing second, Bulega still recorded the fastest lap of the race and set a new race lap record of 1'25.491s.
Behind the leading pair, Yari Montella continued his impressive season by claiming a fourth consecutive podium in third, while home favourite Sam Lowes narrowly missed out on the rostrum after finishing fourth in front of his British supporters.
Tommy Bridewell also produced an encouraging performance to claim fifth place after running strongly throughout the race, giving the home crowd two British riders inside the top five. Lorenzo Baldassarri completed the top six after a late battle with Alex Lowes, while Garrett Gerloff secured his first top-ten finish since Aragón in eighth.
With Bulega demonstrating his dominant pace in qualifying and Lecuona proving he now has the race-winning confidence to match it, Sunday's Superpole Race and Race 2 promises another fascinating chapter in what is one of the standout rivalries of the 2026 WorldSBK season.
