Four Former Champions by Motopinion.
Part One
There are four former Champions on this season's MotoGP grid, all of whom need 2026 to be a much better year than 2025.
Coincidentally and for different reasons, Jorge Martin, Pecco Bagnaia, Fabio Quartararo and Joan Mir would all probably class 2025 as their worst season so far in the premier class and no-one would disagree with this assessment.
All four riders are racing for different manufacturers and for each of them their current contract finishes at the end of this season. Whilst none of them have entered this year as championship contenders, their performances will most likely determine whether they will have a seat next year to, once again, challenge for a title.
Perhaps the most sought after of these former champions, and facing the least amount of pressure is 2021 champion Fabio Quartararo. Throughout 2025, El Diablo made no secret of his frustrations at the lack of speed from his dated in-line 4 Yamaha and, like the factory themselves, hoped the all new V4 would present with a chance to be competing at the front of the field. Disappointingly for all, this has not happened.
Even this early into the season, Yamaha have admitted their focus is now on their 2027 machine and have minimum expectations for the current Yamaha V4 this season. Although this is probably a sensible approach from the highly experienced Japanese concern, this will undoubtably cost them their start rider in Quartararo.
For Fabio, the most important decision he will make this year will not be on track, or a tyre choice, but which manufacturer he signs for in 2027.
The unexpected 4th place grid position in Brazil was totally attributed to the obvious talent of the Frenchman, who once again demonstrated his ability to ‘out qualify’ the true qualities of his machine over a one lap dash. More proof, if it were needed, that he is on top of every teams wish list.
Although, at time of press, it has not been confirmed, Fabio is believed to have signed a multi year deal with Honda in a bid to fight for his second title. Their progress in 2025 possibly convincing him that they will be firmly back at the front next season. However, after the first three races this year, they look to have just maintained their position in the field, rather than progressed. Maybe, just maybe, the delay in confirming the deal is Fabio being extra cautious after being let down before by Japanese assurances and he wants to see evidence of their promises before putting pen to paper.
