Raúl Fernández delivered a faultless ride in the Italian Grand Prix Sprint at Mugello, taking his first MotoGP Sprint victory after controlling the race from the opening lap.
Although Marc Marquez made a superb launch from the second row to grab the holeshot into Turn 1, the Ducati rider was quickly swallowed up by the Aprilias. Fernández moved to the front early, with Jorge Martin slotting in behind him as Aprilia immediately stamped its authority on the race.
From there, Fernández never looked flustered. By the end of lap three, he had already built a small cushion over Martin, while the fight behind began to shuffle the order. Fabio Di Giannantonio worked his way forward with a strong ride, eventually moving into third and giving the Italian crowd a home rider to cheer for.
Pole sitter Marco Bezzecchi endured a more difficult Sprint than expected. After a poor start, he was left trying to recover lost ground rather than fight for victory. He eventually finished fourth, limiting the damage in the championship but missing out on the podium in a race where Aprilia had looked so strong.
Marquez, returning from injury, also had to settle for damage limitation. After briefly leading into the first corner, he slipped back through the order and finished fifth, still collecting points on his comeback weekend.
There was drama further down the field too, with Enea Bastianini and Franco Morbidelli both crashing out at Turn 10, while Francesco Bagnaia recovered late on to finish seventh after another poor start.
At the front, however, Fernández was untouchable. Martin closed in during the final stages, but the Trackhouse rider held firm to take the chequered flag ahead of the factory Aprilia. Di Giannantonio completed the podium, with Bezzecchi fourth and Marquez fifth.
For Fernández, it was a landmark result. For Aprilia, it was another statement at Mugello, and possibly a sign of more to come on Sunday.
