Acosta Takes Sprint Victory After Dramatic Final-Lap Clash in Thailand

The lights are out and its go time! The 2026 MotoGP season roared into life this weekend with a dramatic Sprint race at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, where Pedro Acosta secured his first MotoGP Sprint victory after a thrilling late battle with Marc Marquez.

Heading into Saturday’s Sprint, much of the attention had been on Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi, who dominated that time sheets all weekend and appeared to be the rider to beat.

Bezzecchi lived up to expectation in the early stages of the race, moving to the front and looking comfortable at the head of the race while keeping Marquez at bay. However, his charge came to an abrupt end when he crashed out of the lead, a costly mistake that saw Marquez swoop in to take control.

Once out in front, the eight-time world champion managed the pace while battling attacks from the likes of Pedro Acosta. Acosta refused to let the Spaniard out of his jaws with the young KTM rider duking it out with Marquez for much of the race.

The decisive moment came in the final few laps.

Acosta launched his assault and as the pair approached the final corners on the penultimate lap, Marquez took a last minute lunge to reclaim first position forcing the pair wide and Acosta off the track.

Race officials deemed the move a little too aggressive for their liking and ordered Marquez to relinquish the position, handing victory to a visibly confused Acosta at the last corner of the last lap.

Despite winning his first Sprint race, for Acosta, the victory may have felt somewhat bittersweet. The KTM rider fought hard throughout the race and looked determined to take the victory on track through his own skill and determination. Instead the late decision came from the stewards office and left no time for Marc or Acosta to battle once more.

Even so, his performance has left little doubt about his intentions for the season ahead. Going toe-to-toe with Marquez and pushing him to the limit is the aggression and confidence required to challenge at the very front of MotoGP. If this opening Sprint is anything to go by, the rivalry between Acosta and Marquez could become one of the defining storylines of the 2026 season.
